OUTFIT TIPS+TRICKS

OUtfits are hard.

You’re not alone. Choosing the perfect outfit for your session is overwhelming. I’m the type of person who prefers more structure in decision making so I made this guide for like minded people wanting some advice on what to choose. Please keep in mind that you are more than welcome to wear whatever you’d like to the session. These are just my recommendations to make choosing your outfits go more smoothly!

  • Don’t overthink it

Outfits aren’t the main attraction during your session. They absolutely add some spice but what matters more is your confidence and willingness to be silly and fun with me. I don’t want you to get hung up on your outfit choices and be stressed during the session!

If you’ve never worn heels before in your life, maybe rethink wearing them for your session. My goal is to make your photos a testament to you and if you’re wearing something you would never wear, that might be a little distracting! I want you to feel like you at your best! Also, keep in mind you can totally pull off the barefoot look if you’re into that.

  • WHERE TO START

I find it easier to start with one piece of clothing. Find something you love - jeans, a top, a hat - and then build off of that one item!

  • Locations

I typically choose locations for clients because I like to be able to make sure the spot we go to will work well for photos as well as being able to offer you unique photos at unique spots you may not find on your own. That being said, I am totally up for places you’re envisioning. It’s always fun to come out to a family farm or if you’ve had your eye on a spot I’ve taken photos as before, please feel free to tell me!

  • don’t wear brand graphic tees

I would highly advise against wearing any graphic tees with big, bolded words on them. The classic example to me would be a “Hollister” or “Aeropostale” graphic tee. Maybe that’s not cool anymore but anything with big words draws the attention away from your face and down to your shirt. The exception would be if you wanted to do an outfit with a sports team or school graphic on it but I wouldn’t make this your only outfit!

  • Girls, let your hair down

Girls, it’s sooo much fun if you leave your hair down! We can use it to make movement and interest. Plus, if we take photos around golden hour, that orangey glow is to die for!

  • COLORS: when in doubt, CHOOSE WHITE

If you’re like me, color is a little overwhelming. Trying to decide what would look best together is tricky. You can go for a multicolored outfit combo, monochromatic, neutral plus a color, or all neutrals. I find that white or a simple color and a neutral never look bad especially if you’re unsure on colors. However, please feel free to wear as much color as you please!

  • Personalize

Feel free to bring along a pet or some sort of activity you love! I’ve had seniors bring their pets, art supplies or even their entire makeup stand. We can also grab your favorite fast food or dessert to take some photos with!

3+ OUTFITS

  • I suggest splitting up your outfits into 3 different categories - chill, fancy, and choice.

  • Chill: For this outfit, think more relaxed and street wear. This is something you would wear to a carnival or festival. For me, that may be high waisted jeans and a plain white tee. You could wear sneakers or vans or even go barefoot for this outfit.

  • Fancy: This outfit is something that is unique to you. This isn’t everyday wear, but more on the side of occasion wear. I would say most of my seniors wear a dress or skirt for this outfit. But if you never wear dresses, you may want to go for some jeans and a nice top. Adding something fun/unique to this outfit is always welcome. Think hats, fun jewelry, fun jackets.

  • The remaining outfit(s) are your choice! Sometimes seniors like to incorporate sports or a college into one of their outfits. I’d say most seniors just chose another chill or fancy outfit depending on which style they lean more towards.

1 OUTFIT

  • Start by trying on things in your closet or at the mall to find something that not only makes you feel amazing but that is also comfortable. During the session I may have you sitting down or doing crazy things so something very restrictive or tight might make it difficult to move around.

  • Choose an outfit that is more versatile. With one outfit, you might want to try to get a couple different looks in by adding or taking out certain items. For example you could add a hat or take off a jacket or cardigan.

  • I suggest splitting up your outfits into 3 different categories - chill, fancy, and choice.

  • Chill: For this outfit, think more relaxed and street wear. This is something you would wear to a carnival or festival. Think, jeans and plain white tee. For shoes, you could wear sneakers, vans or something around that style. This should be something that you feel yourself in!

  • Fancy: This outfit is something that is unique to you. This isn’t everyday wear, but more on the side of occasion wear. I would say most of my seniors wear a button up or even a suit for this outfit. But if you never suits/buttons ups, you may want to go for some jeans and a nice top.

  • Choice: Sometimes seniors like to incorporate sports or a college into one of their outfits. I’d say most seniors just chose another chill or fancy outfit depending on which style they lean more towards.
