OUtfits are hard.

You’re not alone. Choosing the perfect outfit for your session is overwhelming. I’m the type of person who prefers more structure in decision making so I made this guide for like minded people wanting some advice on what to choose. Please keep in mind that you are more than welcome to wear whatever you’d like to the session. These are just my recommendations to make choosing your outfits go more smoothly!

INFO, TIPS + TRICKS

  • Don’t overthink it

Outfits aren’t the main attraction during your session. They absolutely add some spice but what matters more is your confidence and willingness to be silly and fun with me. I don’t want you to get hung up on your outfit choices and be stressed during the session!

  • stick to your style

If you never wear dresses, maybe rethink wearing one for your session. Or if your partner never wears button ups, maybe resort to a nice sweater. My goal is to make your photos a testament to you and if you’re wearing something you would never wear, that might be a little distracting! I want you to feel like you at your best!

  • Locations

I typically choose locations for clients because I like to be able to make sure the spot we go to will work well for photos as well as being able to offer you unique photos at unique spots you may not find on your own. That being said, I am totally up for places you’re envisioning. It’s always fun to come out to a family farm or if you’ve had your eye on a spot I’ve taken photos as before, please feel free to tell me!

  • Do wear comfy shoes

Sometimes shoes are the hardest part of the outfit. Who’s with me? Don’t stress about the shoes but do make sure they’re comfortable and that you won’t break an ankle during our session! Also, keep in mind you can totally pull off the barefoot look if you’re into that.

  • don’t wear brand graphic tees

I would highly advise against wearing any graphic tees with big, bolded words on them. The classic example to me would be a “Hollister” or “Aeropostale” graphic tee. Maybe that’s not cool anymore but anything with big words draws the attention away from your face and down to your shirt.

  • COLORS: when in doubt, NEUTRAL

If you’re like me, color is a little overwhelming. Trying to decide what would look best together is tricky. You can go for a multicolored outfit combo, monochromatic, neutral plus a color, or all neutrals. I find that neutrals or a simple color and a neutral never look bad especially if you’re unsure on colors. However, please feel free to wear as much color as you please!

Less is more!! Picking one with mostly neutrals can be the best route to draw the attention away from outfits and onto you!

  • Feeling less than attractive? I feel you… I cried on the day my husband and I were going to take photos and felt like I couldn’t wear anything. YOU ARE GORGEOUS and you are going to want these photos in the future! Looking back at your tummy that held your sweet babe is something you will want to remember.

  • Feel free to bring some ultrasound photos, name signs, shoes, onesies or anything else you want to include in these photos! Let me know if you’re planning to bring along any of these :)

  • If you’d like do your session in your home, I am ALL FOR IT! Those are always so fun and a great way to remember exactly how this time of your life felt.

  • There are 2 directions you could go with your outfit (in my opinion.) You can go for the long, flowy dress and dressier outfit or you can go for for more urban, relaxed outfit! Choose whichever you feel is more you guys and how you’ll want to remember these months of your lives!

  • DRESSY OUTFIT - Longer dresses tend to make the magical kind of photos that I feel most people are drawn to. But honestly, find a dress that makes you feel the best that you can with a watermelon strapped to your stomach. I like to find a more natural location for these photos so colors to maybe stay away from are green and browns. You might blend into the grass! However, I have done sessions with both of those colors and they turned out beautiful!

  • RELAXED OUTFIT - think, jeans and white tee, snuggling with your guy in the comfort of your own home or strolling down the street. Very unique and fun! Check out the Pinterest board above to get some ideas!

PARENTS

  • I find it easier to start with one piece of clothing. Whether it be something you love or something your partner loves, start there and build on it.

  • Colors - choosing colors to go together can be tough but you can search Pinterest or check out Canva to test out some color theory! You can also play it safe and go with neutrals. Please reach out if you need some help with this!

  • Postpartum is always a very interesting time! You may not love how your body looks or feel a little insecure about your new body shape, but I will do my best to “hide” your stomach just so you can focus on your sweet little family. So don’t stress about this and wear something that is comfy and flowy! T-shirt/loose fitting dresses and flowy tops are some really good options!

BABY

  • For baby, I usually suggest picking out - one outfit, onesie and a cute swaddle. You can also show me other things you want photos in!

  • Baby Outfit - I suggest picking out one that shows their little fingers! A lot of newborn clothing have little mittens that cover the hands but little, bitty hands are a detail you’ll want to remember!

  • Onesie - This can be anything you guys like! If you’re unsure, go neutral and plan!

  • Cute swaddle - Pick your favorite swaddle - or swaddles. I use this to wrap baby or place underneath of baby during some more “posed” shots!

  • Naked - I love nakey baby photos! These are always some of my favorites and they help you remember how tiny and little they were!
